CHAPTER ELEVEN

Reverend Mother sat alone and in complete silence. Her mind awash with a future she would play no part in. The chapel brought her solace like no other place could. The bite wound on her neck burned like a hot iron had been pressed against her skin.

Was this the beginning of the end for her, or simply a new beginning?

Hands clasped together in prayer; rosary beads wrapped tightly in and around her fingers brought comfort.

“I have failed you, my Lord.”

Upon closer inspection, she could still see Father Kellarty’s blood, deep red stains ingrained into the stone walls. His death haunted her for ten years.

She focused on the old clock as every tick pulled her closer to midnight.

Two minutes to the hour at hand.

“Heavenly father, rarely have I asked anything of you, but if you can hear me now, I beg, watch over all within these walls and deliver them from evil.”

One minute to go.

“We have served you faithfully and need you now, more than ever.”

Frantic prayers offered as the clock struck twelve. The usual silence of the abbey broken with ear-splitting screams.

“My Lord, please do not forsake us.”

Hurried footsteps struck the floors beyond the chapel doors and soon, the sisters appeared before her.

Sister Lorena burst through the doors first. “Reverend Mother, she is awake and roaming free.” The other sisters gathered close behind her, terrified.

“Come inside and help me bolt the doors; this time shall pass.” She knew Maria would not surrender herself, but the Vatican would intervene and contain her, maybe for good this time.

The remaining nuns rushed in as a pounding noise echoed along the hallways. Shrieks shook the stained-glass windows in their casings.

“Antonia,” the voice called. “I know you’re near.” She sing-songed the words, adding an eerier element to them. “I’m coming for you.”

Bloodlust held Maria in thrall. It took years for it to subside after she fed from Father Kellarty. Reverend Mother knew all too well what spurred her on. She would show no mercy now. “Quickly, Sisters.” She glanced about, nervously. “Where is Sister Helena?”

“I am here.” Sister Helena rushed into the room. “Lock the doors quickly. Maria is not far away.”

The sisters lifted the heavy metal rod which long ago had been engraved with tiny crosses and fitted it in place. “She will not get past this.”

Reverend Mother breathed a sigh of relief and sank into the nearest chair.

“Do you really think so, you sanctimonious bitch?” The haunted tongue called out from beyond the doors.

The Reverend Mother and her sisters froze, terrified—Maria stood outside the chapel doors.

Sister Helena sprang into action. “Sisters, get over to this side of the room right now, and away from those doors.”

“How many of you hide in there I wonder?”

Sister Felicia spoke up. “Go back to the dungeon, Maria, please.”

“Maybe we can play a guessing game to fill the time you waste hiding in there.” She fell silent. “Sister Helena, Sister Gertrude, Sister Penelope, hmm, I wonder who else trembles in fear behind those doors.”

“I gave you what you desired, Maria, now leave this place before His Holiness sends an army to bring you to heel.
